Robert Hoge currently serves as the Member Specially Qualified as a Numismatic Curator. He is Curator Emeritus at the American Numismatic Society (ANS), in New York City, where he served as Curator of North American Coins and Currency from 2001 to 2013. From 1981 to 2001, he was Curator of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) — in charge of the ANA's Money Museum, in Colorado Springs; there, he also served as manager of the ANA's Authentication Bureau, and columnist and contributing editor for the ANA's official publication, The Numismatist. For 20 years, he taught at the ANA's Summer Seminar, and prepared numerous coin and currency exhibits. A long-time member of professional numismatic and museological organizations, Robert has served as a speaker upon many occasions, including numismatic conventions, PBS Television programs and university seminars on numismatic collecting.
Robert's interests and experiences are wide-ranging. Among other activities, he is the only American numismatic curator who has participated in the International Partnerships among Museums (IPAM) program of the American Association of Museums/ International Council of Museums (AAM/ICOM) — partnered with the National Museum of Pakistan, in Karachi.
From 1976 to 1981, Robert was Director of the Sanford Museum and Planetarium, when he also taught cultural anthropology at Buena Vista College, in Iowa. A member of the Phi Beta Kappa national scholastic honorary society, he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology and history from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he has done post-graduate work and obtained teaching certification in the social sciences; he has also pursued post-graduate work at the University of Chicago. Author of many articles and studies, Robert is a recipient of awards from the Numismatic Literary Guild.
